Hakata and Tenjin (old Fukuoka) are the two wards that make up Fukuoka’s city center. These two used to be two independent cities, divided by a river. Tenjin is where you can find a good number of shopping areas; it’s modern but some places will give you a glimpse of Fukuoka’s history. Hakata is equally busy, being the headquarters of many businesses and government offices. This is also the prefecture’s transportation hub where Hakata Station, Fukuoka Airport, and Hakata Port International Passenger Terminal (for cruise ships) are located. Hence, it’s not hard to see why most of Fukuoka’s attraction are found here.

Hakata Station is also where the Sanyo Shinkansen and the Kyushu Shinkansen terminate, making the station bustling with commuters, locals and tourists alike. Fukuoka Airport is just a couple of subway stops away from the JR Hakata Station. Flying from Tokyo is much faster, and can sometimes be cheaper, than taking the bullet train to Fukuoka.
